FAQs

Who is Underrepresented

  • Historically and currently underrepresented in many aspects of the film industry, both on and off-screen.

  • While making strides in some areas like lead acting roles, women are still significantly underrepresented as directors, writers, cinematographers, and in other key behind-the-camera roles. Women of color face even greater underrepresentation.

  • Individuals with physical, sensory, cognitive, or developmental disabilities are significantly underrepresented in all aspects of the film industry, despite making up a substantial portion of the population. Often, characters with disabilities are played by non-disabled actors, and authentic stories are lacking.

  • Severely underrepresented across all areas of the film industry.

  • Despite being a significant portion of the U.S. population and frequent moviegoers, they are often underrepresented in lead roles, directing, and writing.

  • While there has been some progress in representation, particularly in specific genres, they still face underrepresentation and can be subject to stereotypes.

  • Often invisible or stereotypically portrayed in film.

Why its important

  • There's a clear and increasing demand for diverse stories and representation on screen. Audiences, particularly younger generations and minority groups, actively seek out content that reflects their experiences and the diverse world they live in.

  • Studies consistently show that films with diverse casts perform well at the box office, both domestically and globally, indicating a broad audience appeal. Films with casts that are 31-50% BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) often achieve the highest median box office returns.

  • Focusing on films by minorities can bring fresh perspectives, narratives, and storytelling styles that are often underrepresented in mainstream cinema. This can attract viewers looking for something new and authentic.

Our Efforts

  • Mainstream distribution and exhibition often favor established filmmakers and familiar narratives, making it difficult for minority filmmakers to get their work seen. A dedicated platform can bypass these traditional gatekeepers.

  • The platform can attract audiences specifically interested in diverse stories and perspectives, ensuring that these films reach their intended viewers.

  • By curating and showcasing high-quality work, the platform can become a hub for industry professionals (producers, distributors, festival organizers) looking for fresh talent and unique voices. This can lead to further opportunities for the filmmakers.

  • By making these films accessible to a wider audience, the platform can promote empathy, understanding, and a broader view of different cultures and experiences.
